ESSAY 17
THE "FREEDOM" MYTH
Thousands of servicemen and women have given their lives
in order that we might enjoy freedom in America. Every time
that people commit murder, sell or take illegal drugs, steal,
or perform any immoral act, they are despising the ultimate
sacrifice of those who died. They are trampling underfoot
the shed blood of those who died for our freedom. Those who
abuse their freedom in this way may feel that they are free,
but they have despised their American birthright and have
brought themselves under bondage.
Those who murder another human being live in fear of be-
ing caught and place themselves under the heavy burden of
guilt--this is bondage, not freedom. Those who prostitute
their freedom to experiment with drugs become enslaved to
drugs. Those who steal material goods lose their self-respect
and acquire more guilt and bondage. Those who indulge in
promiscuous sex set themselves up for escalating sex addic-
tion. Sex addiction is another bondage--and they will proba-
bly contract AIDS or some other incurable STD.
We are ALL under some degree of bondage. Is there hope?
Thankfully, the answer is, "Yes!" About two thousand years
ago, one died to set us free from the bondage of sin. Jesus
chose to shed His blood for us so that we could become free.
If we invite the Lord Jesus into our hearts, He will come in
and set us free.
. . .If the Son sets you free, you will be free
indeed. (John 8:36).
